Non-Negotiables for Self-Care

This past year I have really shifted my mindset and upped my game when it comes to self-care. I have tried various different types of self-care (this included a fair bit of trial and error) and I have come to learn that there are some things in my life that I need to make non-negotiable.

What is a non-negotiable?

A non-negotiable is something you do every single day without fail. We wake up every morning and it’s a given that we brush our teeth, right? (Well hopefully). This is how I think of my non-negotiables. They are a given part of my day that I *have* to make time for because I know they make me feel good. A non-negotiable is something that you do not leave the house (or finish the day) without doing. It is the most important commitment to yourself that you cannot break.

Why I introduced daily non-negotiables...

To put it simply, they significantly improve the overall quality of my life. When I do my non-negotiables, I am a nicer person. I am happier, calmer, more patient, more positive, less reactive and I just have a better day. If I for whatever reason, cannot do my daily non-negotiables, then I can notice the difference. I am short tempered and very defensive. I snap at the people I love (mainly my husband, sorry boo) and I whinge like a mother trucker. I fall from gratitude to comparison, all because I haven't taken time out for myself.

So what are my non-negotiables?

First of all let me say, that just because these are my non-negotiables, it doesn't mean they will feel right for you. Allow yourself time and space for some trial and error until you discover what works best for you. In no particular order, these are the things I do every single day:

Journalling: This is probably the most amazing thing I have ever done for my self-awareness and mental health. I have a whole YouTube video about how I journal if you want to learn more.

Movement: In the mornings I like to wiggle my body a little and just move and stretch in a way that makes me feel good and energised. Usually this is a mini yoga flow or a walk.

Meditation: This has really been life changing for me. It allows me to start my day in a calm, aware and grateful mindset, and allows me to process whatever is thrown my way that day. I use an app called Calm which I highly recommend (it offers a 7 day free trial and then is something ridiculously cheap like £30 a year, well worth the investment).

Benefits of introducing non-negotiables:

- Improves positive mindset

- Makes you at least 10% happier

- Improves patience

- Reduces stress

- Better prepared to handle negativity throughout the day

- Makes you a nicer, calmer person

- Improves the relationship you have with yourself.
