When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemon Water!

We often hear how certain things are good for us but we rarely actually get an explanation why. For example, you've probably heard loads of people talk about drinking lemon water but might not actually know why it is good for you. So let me explain!

So first of all let me explain why it is beneficial to drink water in the morning, more specifically warm water. After being asleep for 6,7,8 hours, our body is pretty dehydrated! I mean when you think about it, that's a long time without any fluids, right? So a big glass of water first thing when you wake up really helps to rehydrate the body and set you up for the day. A hydrated body is a happy body! Think to the last time you were really thirsty and recall how you felt...Not amazing right? Personally, when I haven't had enough water I feel lethargic, agitated, my skin breaks out, I feel bloated and I just feel sluggish in general. Definitely not the way I want to feel, which is why I always start my day with warm water (always with lemon). I say warm water because the body reacts better to warm foods and drinks as it is closer to our body temperature; this means the body doesn't have to work as hard to digest it. The warmth of the water helps to wake you up internally and flushes the digestive system for a fresh start to your day. When you add lemon to the equation it acts as an extra boost to help flush out the toxins in your body. Yes, our liver is a natural flush for the bodies toxins but it works really hard, especially at night when you're sleeping. So adding a squeeze of lemon to your warm water just gives it a little helping hand.

It is so important as humans that we stay hydrated as our bodies heavily depend of water to survive. We are made up of around 60% water after all! Every cell, tissue and organ needs water to work properly. The body uses water to regulate temperature, remove waste and lubricate joints amongst lots of other significant functions. So you can appreciate just how important it is that we keep this water topped up. To put it simply, we just wouldn't function without water. And if you want the best start to your day possible then add a big glass of warm lemon water to your daily routine and you'll really notice the difference.

P.S. Because of the natural acidity of lemons (citrus) refrain from brushing your teeth straight after (wait at least 30 mins) or even better try drinking through a straw :)
